Museum of Vine and Wine

Dedicated to the winemaking tradition of the Drăgășani region

Museums

The Vine and Wine Museum is dedicated to the winemaking tradition of the Drăgășani region, one of the oldest and most renowned viticultural areas in the country. The museum's permanent exhibition aims to showcase the evolution of vine cultivation and wine production in the region, from ancient times to the present.

The archaeology room features artifacts that demonstrate humanity's early relationship with the vine, including Neolithic clay vessels and fragments of Dacian and Roman pottery used for storing wine. The museum's collection continues with historical written sources, presenting the earliest records of viticulture in Vâlcea County, found in documents from the time of Mircea the Elder. The exhibit then displays various viticulture tools, from wooden-hooped barrels and a wooden valise used for transporting wine, to spraying pumps and devices for measuring alcohol content.

The museum also houses a poster from the 1889 Eiffel Tower inauguration, when, at the Paris Universal Exposition, Iordache Ionescu, a famous winemaker from the region, won 2nd and 3rd place in the wine competition, the original medals being displayed inside the museum as well.

The exhibition concludes upstairs, where several rooms feature diverse items such as looms and carpets, traditional costumes, pottery, over 100-year-old furniture, and grape varieties preserved in vessels dating back to 1982.
