The rivers and the lakes, of various sizes and found across all the geographical features of the county, form a rich hydrographic network that significantly contributes to the natural beauty of the region.
Due to its geographical position, the county has numerous rivers and streams that originate in the Carpathians and flow through picturesque valleys. One example is the Lotru River, whose spring is considered to be Lake Gâlcescu, the largest glacial lake in the Parâng Mountains, declared as a natural monument, with its surroundings constituting a natural reserve.
Along the Lotru River, several reservoirs have been developed, such as Brădișor and Vidra, the latter being an impressive reservoir with a length of approximately 9 km, surrounded by dense forests and mountains. Lake Vidra is a popular spot for mountain tourism, offering a spectacular natural setting where visitors can enjoy various activities such as fishing, boating, hiking, or observing local flora and fauna.
Most of the dams and reservoirs in the county, primarily used for electricity production, are located on the Olt River, which flows through Vâlcea County from north to south. The Olt, known in ancient times as Alutus (its Latin name), has numerous historical references. In the past, it was an important trade route, a place of cultural and economic convergence, and a vital artery for the peoples who lived along its banks, including the Dacians, Romans, and later medieval populations.
