Mountains and Caves

Vâlcea County benefits from an exceptional natural setting, with mountains and caves that attract tourists from all corners of the country and beyond. This region is sought after by both spelunking enthusiasts and casual travelers looking to enjoy the beauty of nature, offering a variety of landscapes and unique experiences, from towering, wild mountains to mysterious caves that hide old legends.

The mountains in the county are renowned for the diverse opportunities they offer for hiking and exploration. One such example, the Cozia Mountains, are characterized by rocky terrain with steep peaks and deep gorges. Located in the southwestern part of the county, the Căpățânii Mountains are predominantly formed of limestone, which has led to the development of impressive karst landscapes, while in the northwest, the Lotru Mountains dominate, known for their picturesque landscapes, covered by vast forests and alpine zones.

The caves also hold a unique charm, and although very numerous—over 60 known caves—very few are open to visitors. One of these is Bears' Cave in the Bistrița Gorges, along with Bats' Cave, located nearby. The latter, also called Saint Gregory Cave due to its association with the saint's life, whose relics were hidden there during the Ottoman invasions, is known for the bat colonies that inhabit it and for its varied limestone formations. Inside, two ancient churches can also be found.
