The Bălcescu Manor, also known as the "Nicolae Bălcescu" Memorial Museum, is a prominent historical and cultural site in Vâlcea County, located in the village of the same name. This manor, whose foundation stone was laid in 1828, belonged to the family of the revolutionary leader Nicolae Bălcescu, one of the influential noble families of Wallachia.
Renovated and expanded over time, the manor retains its original architecture, typical of the period, and stands as a classic example of boyar architecture with “Brâncovenesc style” influences. The interior also preserves many original features, including furniture and decorations, as well as unique elements such as Venetian mirrors, tile stoves, a clock from Vienna, and traditional costumes from the Topolog Valley region.
The museum's exhibition is divided into two parts: the first aims to recreate the atmosphere of the late 19th century, while the second focuses on the life and work of Nicolae Bălcescu, keeping alive his memory and contribution to the revolutionary movement and to the political and social thinking of the time.
In addition to its museum activities, the manor hosts photography and painting workshops, with one salon dedicated to the painter Zoe Bălcescu-Mandrea, Nicolae Bălcescu's niece. Visitors can also explore an old wooden church and a beautifully landscaped park on the estate.
A project financed with the support of the General Secretariat of the Government through SDC.
