The "Visit Vâlcea" project is an invitation to discover Vâlcea County and aims to promote it by highlighting its tangible and intangible heritage. Thus, the project seeks to bring to the forefront both its natural elements and those related to the history, culture, spirituality, or traditions of the region, all structured into five categories as follows:
- Destinations
- Attractions
- Historical Monuments
- Museums
- Traditions
Among the representative destinations of Vâlcea County, which are also included in this project, are Râmnicu Vâlcea, a unique city that combines the charm of nature with cultural and historical richness, and the city of Drăgășani, primarily known for its millennia-old winemaking tradition. The spa resort Băile Olănești, famous for its therapeutic mineral springs, and Călimănești-Căciulata, the gateway to Cozia National Park, are also featured. Last but not least, there is also Horezu, where the pottery tradition holds a place of honor, this being part of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The attractions in Vâlcea County are extremely diverse, ranging from rivers and lakes that form a rich hydrographic network, such as the Lotru River and Vidra Lake, to majestic mountains and mysterious caves. Additionally, the county is home to impressive waterfalls and spectacular gorges, such as the Olt Valley and Bistrița Gorges, two national parks with great biodiversity, and even a salt mine located in Ocnele Mari.
Historical monuments are also well-represented, the Vâlcea County boasting, among others, with the Anton Pann Memorial House, a superb piece of urban architecture that was relocated via railway tracks, and with the Hurezi Monastery, a jewel of Brâncovenesc-style architecture, whose influences are also seen at the Bălcești Manor, a classic example of boyar architecture. Other notable monuments include the fortresses from Măldărești, tower-houses built for defensive purposes, as well as the Roman Castrum Arutela, a symbol of the Roman presence in the region.
The museums that can be visited in Vâlcea County cover various themes, the art and the history having two dedicated museums in Râmnicu Vâlcea. On the outskirts of the city, you can also find the Vâlcean Village Museum, which successfully recreates the image of the traditional village specific to this area. Additionally, in Govora, the Museum of Archaeology and Religious Art, named after its founder, Father Gheorghe Petre, can be explored, while in Drăgășani, the Vine and Wine Museum warmly welcomes those who want to learn more about the history of viticulture.
The local traditions are incredibly varied, the most well-known being the pottery from the Horezu area and the winemaking tradition of Drăgășani. Shepherding also holds a special place, particularly among the residents of Vaideeni commune, just as the salt tradition is a defining element for the town of Ocnele Mari. Moreover, the local folk costumes, rich in details, colors, and symbols, reflect the ethnographic identity of this region.
In addition to the ones mentioned above, Vâlcea County also benefits from numerous other attractions and tourist sites of great interest, reason why we invite you, through the "Visit Vâlcea" project, to discover this wonderful county!
